Longhorns Fall in Three Sets
Texas' six-match win streak snapped
No. 6 Texas volleyball was defeated by No. 2 Stanford in three sets (25-20, 25-18, 25-22) on Sunday afternoon in Palo Alto, Calif., snapping the Longhorns' six-match win streak.
Stanford, which improved to 10-2 on the season, opened the match with a 4-0 run and never trailed in the first set. Texas chipped away at the deficit and pulled within two points, 22-20, but Stanford scored the final three points to take the set.
The second set was more of the same, as Stanford jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back. Texas was able to cut the lead to three, 18-15, but Stanford scored the final seven points to win the set.
In the third set, Texas took an early 4-1 lead but Stanford quickly tied the score at 5-5. The teams traded points back and forth until Stanford took a 16-13 lead. Texas got within one, 22-21, but Stanford scored the final three points to win the set and the match.
Texas was led by junior outside hitter Asjia O'Neal, who had 12 kills. Junior middle blocker Madisen Skinner added 10 kills and five blocks, and senior setter Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres had 32 assists.
Stanford was led by senior outside hitter Kathryn Plummer, who had 16 kills. Junior middle blocker Caitie Baird added 10 kills and six blocks, and senior setter Jenna Gray had 37 assists.
With the loss, Texas dropped to 10-5 on the season. The Longhorns will return to action on Friday, Sept. 23, when they host No. 13 Baylor at Gregory Gym.
