Devastation Unfolding as Magnitude 7.6 Earthquake Rocks Noto Peninsula
TOKYO, Japan (January 1, 2023) - A major earthquake has struck the Noto peninsula in central Japan, triggering widespread panic and devastation. The quake, with a magnitude of 7.6 on Japan's Shindo scale, has claimed the life of at least one person and injured dozens more.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the earthquake struck at around 4:10 pm local time (03:10 UTC) and was centered near the city of Nanao in Ishikawa Prefecture. The quake was shallow, with a depth of just 10 kilometers (6 miles), which has amplified its destructive power.
In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, more than 35 aftershocks with a magnitude greater than 2.5 have struck the region, further compounding the damage. Buildings have collapsed, roads have been cracked, and power lines have been severed, leaving tens of thousands of people without electricity.
